Our history …
In 1927, the first Chapel was constructed from 2 boxcars in the Rock Island Railroad yards in Silvis and was dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe. In 1929, with money donated by diocesan priests, built a frame church on Fourth Street in Silvis. The mission of Our Lady of Guadalupe changed when Bishop John Franz granted full parish status on October 10, 1962. In 1964 the diocese purchased a 10-acre tract of land located on 17th Street and 8th Avenue in Silvis which was to become the site for the building of the new church and rectory. In May 1968, construction of the new church, seating 560 and a rectory began. The first Mass was offered on Mother’s Day, May 11, 1969 and dedicated by Bishop Franz on November 16, 1960.
Our Parish Center was built in 1977 and dedicated on December 11, 1977, the day before the Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe. There was a Golden Jubilee Celebration with an Apostolic Blessing for the Parish.
Hard to believe we have most recently celebrated the latest building of the Church being 50 years old in 2018. To celebrate that Jubilee, we had Bishop Jenky here to help the parish celebrate!
